We are looking for a PhD student at the Department of Intelligent Systems (http://dis.ijs.si), Jozef Stefan Institute, Ljubljana, Slovenia, under the supervision of Assist. Prof. Dr. Anton Gradišek, starting in October 2023.
Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing the field of medicine. Recently, our research team has been working on a series of projects developing systems to assist patients with chronic diseases, such as diabetes, chronic heart failure, and dermatological problems, as well as with systems that assist the elderly with independent living. The core of these projects are smart and wearable sensors that provide insight into the habits or health status of the user. The other group of projects focused on large medical datasets from the public health perspective. We investigated risks for cancer, health problems due to a lack of physical activity, and risks for development of chronic kidney disease. We collaborate with a broad network of medical doctors and experts from other fields from Slovenia and worldwide. Some of our recent publications include:

We are looking for a candidate with a completed MSc degree in computer science, physics, mathematics, or electrotechnics, with a good knowledge of programming, and who is interested in working in a highly interdisciplinary research team. The candidate should be 28 or younger and is expected to have completed their MSc thesis by September 2023, with the average grade of at least 8 (out of 10) or equivalent.
The position is to start on October 1st 2023 and is funded by the Slovenian National Research Agency (ARRS). The candidate will enroll in the PhD program at Jozef Stefan International Postgraduate School. The salary is aligned with the regular practice in the Slovenian research sector.
