Jožef Stefan Institute (JSI) is a widening partner in the WideHealth project, and the leader of WP2 on early stage researcher and researcher training. JSI is also the largest research institute in Slovenia, founded in 1949 and currently employing over 1,000 staff. It pursues research in three broad areas: (1) physics, (2) chemistry, biochemistry, materials and environment, and (3) electrical engineering and information technology. It collaborates with a wide network of research institutions and companies in Slovenia and across the globe. To transfer the expertise of its senior researchers to students, and to provide training for early-stage researchers employed ad JSI, it has established Jožef Stefan International Postgraduate School.
The researchers involved in the WideHealth project are from the Department of Intelligent systems (DIS), which conducts research on artificial intelligence: machine learning, decision support, bioinspired optimization, intelligent agents, speech and language technologies. A topic of particular interest to the department is health. DIS has started applying intelligent computer methods to health problems in 2008, and has established the Ambient Intelligence Group to tackle these problems in 2011. The group has extensive experience with interpretation of sensor data, health risk prediction, personalized health advice and similar. The department has won several scientific competitions on these topics, such as Sussex-Huawei Locomotion-Transportation Recognition Challenge, and has recently been one of the two grand winners of the $500k XPrize Pandemic Response Challenge.
JSI team is led by Dr Mitja Luštrek, who is the head of the Ambient Intelligence Group. He has been the principal investigator in most of DIS’s projects on health-related topics. Nina Reščič is the JSI researcher who dedicates the most time to WideHealth. She is a PhD student at Jožef Stefan International Postgraduate School whose PhD is about applying artificial intelligence to nutrition questionnaire data, and she is collaborating with other WideHealth partners on this topic. Other members of the department also get involved occasionally.
The EU-funded WideHealth project aims to conduct research on pervasive eHealth and establish a sustainable network of research and dissemination across Europe.
