The Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje (UKIM) is the Coordinator and a widening partner in the WideHealth project. UKIM is the first and largest state University in N. Macedonia, founded in 1949 and encompassing 23 faculties, 5 research institutes and 4 public scientific institutions. It has over 60.000 enrolled students in the first and second cycle of studies and 655 PhD students. UKIM develops study programmes in all scientific fields: natural sciences and mathematics, technical and technological sciences, medical sciences and health, biotechnical sciences, social sciences, humanities and arts.
WideHealth project participants from UKIM mainly originate from the institute of Computer Technology and Engineering (CTE) at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technologies, (FEEIT). The main areas of expertise of the team are computer engineering, artificial intelligence and machine learning. The most important and relevant application domains are eHealth, wearable computing, and ambient intelligence – with special focus on human activity recognition, fall detection, and human behavior monitoring. The WideHealth members from UKIM receive expertise and knowledge transfer on all the WideHealth research topics: human factors, federated learning and data driven healthcare. On the other hand, other partners in the project can benefit from UKIM’s expertise on the activity recognition and wearable computing.
UKIM’s team comprises four professors as senior researchers, i.e., Dr. Hristijan Gjoreski (also WideHealth Project Manager), Dr. Daniel Denkovski, Dr. Valentin Rakovic and Dr. Marija Kalendar. Two teaching assistants are also involved as young researchers in the project: Ana Cholakoska and Bojana Velichkovska. They are also enrolled as PhD students at UKIM and will receive joint co-supervision from the other partners in the project. The team also includes financial and administrative staff from FEEIT/UKIM, responsible for financial and administrative aspects of the project.
The current activities in the WideHealth Project include successful organization of a Special Session on eHealth and Pervasive Health and a Round Table on Challenges and Opportunities in eHealth and Pervasive Health Technologies at the ETAI 2021 conference . Furthermore, the established collaborations with JSI, FBK and HPI have resulted in 3 joint journal papers and 3 joint conference/workshop papers in the first year of the WideHealth project. UKIM will be the host and the main organizer of the first thematic Winter school in the project, on the topic of Pervasive Health, which will be held in February 2022.
The EU-funded WideHealth project aims to conduct research on pervasive eHealth and establish a sustainable network of research and dissemination across Europe.
